Jinja City has been plunged into mourning after the sudden death of Alex Kiwanuka, its Principal Revenue Collection Supervisor. The 50-year-old passed away on Easter Sunday at Nile International Hospital around 4 p.m. due to cardiac arrest, leaving behind seven children.
City Mayor Alton Peter Kasolo called the loss ‘deeply unfortunate,’ praising Kiwanuka’s hard work in enhancing revenue collection. He noted that most local funds come from internal sources rather than grants, with Kiwanuka key to hitting targets. Under his leadership since May 2021, collections rose from Shs1.5 million to a projected Shs15 billion next financial year.
Previously an accountant in the Northern Division, Kiwanuka earned a reputation for diligence and professionalism. Mayor Kasolo urged officials and residents to prioritize health checks, warning against overwork and sudden heart issues.
Deputy Speaker Sirina Kyakuwaire remembered him as principled, humble, and corruption-free, always respectful and dedicated to the city.
A requiem mass is set for St. Andrew Church in Jinja, with burial on Wednesday at his ancestral home in Magamaga Town Council. An alumnus of Kiira College Butiki, Kiwanuka’s public service legacy endures.
