A tragic road accident on the Masaka-Mbarara Highway claimed eight lives and left 33 injured when a box-body truck slammed into the back of a passenger bus around 1:00am in Kalengo Village, Lwengo District.

The truck, registered UBH 013Q and heading from Masaka to Mbarara, rear-ended the bus (UAL 492L) en route to Rukungiri due to excessive speed, according to Southern Region Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye. Both vehicles overturned multiple times after impact.

The injured were quickly taken to hospitals in Kyazanga and Lyantonde for treatment. Among the confirmed dead is Ernest Abaho, a policeman from Mukono Central Police Station. Most victims lacked ID, prompting police appeals for families to assist with identification and body claims.

This incident raises the death toll from road crashes in the greater Masaka area to 12 in less than three days, including prior accidents in Kalungu and Lyantonde on April 4 and 5. Investigations continue into the crash’s cause.

Uganda’s road fatalities hit 5,383 in 2025, or about 15 per day, per the latest Traffic Police Directorate report.
