A devastating road accident claimed eight lives on Tuesday morning along the Mbarara–Lyantonde–Masaka highway at Kalegeero junction in Lyantonde district.
The incident involved a Kasaba bus, registration UAL 492H, traveling from Rukungiri to Kampala. Police report the driver, allegedly speeding, swerved off the road while trying to avoid an oncoming truck, about 60 km from Mbarara.
Greater Masaka Regional Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed eight bus occupants died instantly. At least 14 injured passengers were rushed to facilities like Lyantonde General Hospital and Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
Three of the deceased are believed to be women, though full identities remain unconfirmed. Police have requested a passenger manifest from the bus company to identify victims, especially those still unconscious.
Rescue teams, aided by police, extracted bodies from the overturned wreckage, where some victims were trapped inside or underneath.
