A tragic road accident on the Masaka-Mbarara highway in Lwengo District’s Kalegero village has claimed 11 lives. The collision happened early Tuesday between a Kasaba Bus Company passenger bus and a box body truck.
Southern Region Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye reported that three seriously injured individuals passed away at Lyantonde Hospital, upping the initial count of eight on-site deaths. Among the victims is Christine Kyomuhangi, with others still unidentified, and a police officer named Ernest Abaho from Mukono Central Police.
Authorities are pursuing the bus driver who fled the scene. Initial investigations by Lwengo traffic police indicate reckless driving as the likely cause.
This incident marks the 15th road death in the greater Masaka region over the past three days, including two fatalities each in Kalungu and Lyantonde Districts on April 4 and 5, 2026.
Uganda’s 2025 crime statistics, released in March, recorded 5,383 road fatalities nationwide.
