Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Tom Magambo, head of Uganda’s Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), has urged building a robust societal value system, especially among the youth, to foster a safer nation and cut down on criminal activities.

Speaking on a local TV station, Magambo stressed that instilling proper mindsets in children is key to grounding society and reducing offenses. Recent police data shows a positive trend, with reported crimes falling 10.2% from 218,715 in 2024 to 196,405 last year.

However, he noted that criminal methods are advancing quickly, demanding that law enforcement boost its skills to keep pace. Magambo also flagged rising land disputes as a worry, calling on leaders to create stronger frameworks to protect land systems.

Under his four-year leadership, CID has notched up around 89,000 convictions, but challenges persist. He pointed to poor police station infrastructure nationwide, vowing improvements after firsthand inspections.

Aiming high, Magambo wants nationwide crime reports to plunge below 50,000 cases. He issued a bold challenge to criminals, daring them to test the police’s resolve in upholding the law.
