The Buganda Kingdom is pushing forward with its ‘Tubeere Balamu’ (Let’s Live Healthy) campaign to encourage health insurance uptake among subjects, aiming to boost healthcare access and quality.

Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, addressing leaders at Mengo, highlighted the kingdom’s longstanding focus on public health from pre-colonial eras. He stressed that a healthy population is essential for a strong kingdom, positioning the initiative as key support for Kabaka’s subjects.

The campaign features health camps across the region offering free services, drawing over 10,000 attendees each time and underscoring the need for affordable care. Mayiga noted these efforts provide temporary relief but insurance offers a lasting fix to ease family financial strains during illnesses.

Partnering with Jubilee Insurance and Weerinde Insurance Brokerage Services Ltd, the scheme provides Shs2 million for outpatient care, Shs2 million for chronic conditions, and Shs1.5 million for permanent disability, at an annual premium of Shs165,000.

Bishop Henry Katumba Tamale, Kabaka Foundation board chairman, urged faith leaders to promote it, linking insurance to biblical principles of saving for tough times. Ms Jennifer Mirembe Ssensuwa of Weerinde called for collaborative risk management between insurers and clients.
