Police in Uganda’s Kassanda District arrested 60-year-old Ronald Kakooza over the murder of 61-year-old Phoebe Nalugwa from Kizibawo Village, Bukuya sub-county. Nalugwa was discovered dead in her bedroom on April 6 in what authorities call a premeditated and gruesome killing.
Nalugwa had won a land dispute in Mubende Chief Magistrate’s Court last month, with a surveyor scheduled to demarcate the property on April 18. Locals reported she faced repeated threats, including warnings that a favorable ruling would end her life. She had filed two prior complaints of threats at Kassanda and Mubende police stations, both pending in court.
Assailants broke into her home overnight, attacking her while asleep with a sharp object that caused fatal wounds to her head and left arm. Her body was found by Grace Nalutaaya, who came to pay for coffee supplies and alerted village leaders and police after discovering her lifeless.
Officers from Bukuya and Kassanda Central processed the scene, and the body underwent postmortem at Kassanda Health Centre IV. Two other suspects remain at large. Wamala Region Police spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi urged respect for court decisions and using legal appeals instead of violence.
Kakooza, involved in the land case, is helping with investigations and faces potential charges once evidence is gathered.
