Dorothy Anena, 32, from Bukerere Sonde in Mukono District, faces a dire medical crisis after a hit-and-run accident on November 23, 2024. Riding on a boda boda, her right leg was crushed, leading to extensive knee damage.
Rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital, she endured multiple emergency surgeries, including plastic surgery and external fixation. Doctors once contemplated amputation as recovery seemed impossible.
Discharged in February 2025 amid an Ebola scare, Anena now relies on home care for wound dressing. She cannot move her leg, turn in bed, or handle basic tasks like bathing without help. Pain worsens in cold weather, managed only by painkillers.
Dr. Isaac Kyamanywa at Mulago stresses the urgency of a total knee replacement and patella tendon reconstruction. Without it, her leg will shorten further, dooming her to immobility. The procedure costs Shs40m (Shs30m for implants and reconstruction, Shs10m for meds and care).
Orphaned at 12 and living with siblings, Anena’s family cannot afford this. They appeal for donations.
