Understanding the Origins and Progression of Tooth Decay
Tooth decay, or dental caries, ranks as the most common disease globally, beginning with bacteria on teeth that feed on sugars to produce harmful acids. These acids erode enamel and can spread deeper if not addressed early. Source: https://www.monitor.co.ug/uganda/magazines/healthy-living/how-tooth-decay-starts-and-spreads-5412536
Tooth decay, scientifically termed dental caries, affects millions worldwide and is considered the leading chronic condition. It starts when bacteria in the mouth mix with food particles, especially sugars, forming plaque on tooth surfaces.
This plaque generates acids that attack the enamel, the hard outer layer of teeth. Over time, these acids create small holes or cavities, weakening the tooth structure.
If ignored, decay advances beneath the enamel into the dentin and eventually the pulp, causing pain, infection, and potential tooth loss. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are key to prevention.
