Uganda showcased its Robusta and Arabica coffee varieties at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) 2026, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest coffee trade show that attracted over 31,000 visitors. High Commissioner to Australia Dorothy Hyuha Samali led the delegation, marking the country’s first full participation after years of attending as spectators.

Hyuha emphasized Uganda’s investment-friendly environment and regulated coffee sector, positioning it as a serious global partner. ‘We want to penetrate the Australian market with coffee as our key crop,’ she stated, highlighting government support for this strategic move.

Assistant Commissioner Gordon Katwirenabo promoted opportunities in roasting, branding, packaging, and distribution. He noted Uganda’s status as the birthplace of Robusta coffee, with reforms in post-harvest handling and quality assurance enhancing competitiveness in premium markets.

As one of the world’s top 10 producers supporting 1.7 million households, Uganda seeks to retain more value domestically instead of exporting mostly raw green beans. Low production costs and improving quality in regions like Mount Elgon and Bugisu offer strong potential.

Australia’s coffee culture and demand for traceable products make it an ideal target, with plans to expand into Australasia and Asia for brand recognition.
