Kikuube district is in deep mourning following the sudden death of its LC V chairperson, Peter Banura, in a fatal road accident on Saturday evening along the Hoima–Fort Portal highway.

Banura, son of Maj Gen Matayo Kyaligonza, Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi, first won the position in 2021. He secured re-election in recent local polls with 37,455 votes, beating NUP’s Phenekansi Timanyire who got 6,230 votes.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Banura had stopped his official Toyota Hilux (UG 3400 084) by the roadside to talk with some people when a Toyota Hiace taxi (UBQ 853E) from Fort Portal to Hoima rammed into them around 8:20 pm due to over-speeding and reckless driving.

He suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital. The taxi driver fled, but police have impounded the vehicle and are hunting for him to aid the probe. Banura’s body was moved to Mengo Hospital for autopsy.

This tragedy echoes the 2023 crash that killed former Hoima LC V chair Kadir Kirungi on the Hoima–Kampala road.
