Yafes Otim Omara, the former Minister of State for Tourism and Antiquities, has passed away at the age of 70.
His younger brother, Charles Joshua Otoka, confirmed that Omara died at 4:00am on Sunday at his son’s residence in Kiambu County, Kenya. The body is currently at a funeral home in Nairobi, pending repatriation to Alerek in Abim District for burial.
Omara entered politics as MP for Labwor County in Abim District and was appointed minister in 1996.
He had a history of health challenges, including a government-funded kidney transplant in New Delhi, India, in 2009. This was followed by heart surgeries in India and Nairobi. His condition improved until a stroke struck on January 31 last year, leading to ongoing treatment at Karen Hospital in Nairobi, where one son works as a doctor.
Omara leaves behind three sons.
Local figure Dickson Koreya Ogira, a model farmer from Arengekitohoe village, described him as the greatest leader Abim has known, with the Ethur community in mourning.
