Uganda's Catholic Bishops Demand Release of Political Detainees in Easter Appeal

The Catholic Church in Uganda issued its 2026 Easter pastoral message on April 4 from the Uganda Catholic Secretariat in Nsambya, calling for the release of individuals detained due to political activities following the January 2026 elections.

Bishop Joseph Antony Zziwa, Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference and leader of the Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese, delivered the message. He noted that the nation still faces deaths, injuries, trauma, and ongoing detentions tied to political events.

“We appeal to the Government to consider the release of those detained for political reasons, and to establish a lasting mechanism for national reconciliation, fostering a culture of constitutionalism, justice, and the rule of law,” the statement urged.

Bishop Zziwa encouraged Ugandans to embrace repentance, forgiveness, and unity while addressing political rifts, economic struggles, and moral issues. He called on Christians to embody values like love, peace, patience, and self-control, drawing from Christ’s example.

The bishops referenced their 2025 pastoral letter, The Truth Will Set You Free, which stresses accountability and healing. They invoked the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi to promote peace-building, love, and hope.

The message included greetings from Pope Leo XIV, who praised the Catholic Church’s expansion in Uganda during the bishops’ recent Vatican visit. As Easter Sunday unfolds, the Church invites reflection on Jesus’ resurrection as a beacon of victory over sin and a prompt for faith-driven service.
