Pope Leo delivered a powerful Easter message from St. Peter’s Square, urging global leaders to stop wars and forsake desires for power and domination.

Addressing thousands, the pontiff warned against becoming numb to violence, exclaiming, ‘Let those who have weapons lay them down! Let those who have the power to unleash wars choose peace!’ He emphasized Christ’s nonviolent resurrection as a model for abandoning conflict.

Though avoiding specific conflicts, Leo has intensified criticism of the Iran war recently, including a direct appeal to U.S. President Donald Trump for an end to it and pleas during the Easter vigil to actively pursue peace.

The brief address included Easter greetings in ten languages amid festive floral displays. Pope Leo also plans a peace prayer vigil at the Basilica on April 11.
