Museveni Directs Official Burial for Retired Supreme Court Justice Nshimye

President Yoweri Museveni has instructed that retired Supreme Court Justice Augustine Sebutulo Nshimye receive an official burial, honoring his decades of service in Uganda’s judiciary, legislature, and executive branches.

Justice Nshimye, aged 80, died on Friday at his home on Mawanda Road in Kampala after battling cancer. Minister for Presidency Mily Babirye Babalanda, chairing the burial committee, announced the government’s decision in a statement dated April 4.

The statement expressed condolences to the family, Judiciary, legal community, Mityana residents, and all Ugandans, calling Nshimye an illustrious legal icon and dedicated public servant. The directive invokes Article 99 of the Constitution, granting the President executive authority for such honors.

Funeral arrangements include a service on Monday at 2:00 pm at All Saints Cathedral in Nakasero, Kampala, followed by burial on Tuesday in Namutamba Village, Bulera Sub-county, Mityana District. The government will cover security, tents, food, and transport.

Nshimye’s career began in 1967 as a senior clerk. He served as Deputy Chief Registrar from 1986-1988, then practiced privately before rejoining the Judiciary in 2008 as a Court of Appeal Justice. Promoted to Supreme Court in 2015, he retired in 2017 but continued as acting Justice and court mediator.

Politically, he represented Mityana South in Parliament from 1988-2008, held a ministerial post, and was a founding NRM member. He also pioneered as Chief Inspector of Courts.
