During Easter Sunday Mass at Lubaga Cathedral in Kampala on April 5, 2026, Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere delivered a powerful sermon urging government and private sector leaders to abandon corruption.
He compared graft to Judas Iscariot’s betrayal of Jesus, stating that public sinners face fatal consequences if they do not repent. ‘Corruption has become normal in Uganda,’ he said, calling for moral and spiritual renewal to restore public trust.
The archbishop highlighted how corruption drains resources, noting Uganda loses over Shs10 trillion yearly according to a 2024 Inspectorate of Government report. This echoed Buganda King Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II’s recent criticism of poor hospital services despite tax funding.
Ssemogerere also condemned broader societal ills like greed, violence, deceit, womanising, social media abuse, and the normalisation of ‘evil behaviours’ such as online ugliness contests. He stressed that God created no useless person.
He warned against reckless driving during festivities, rising robberies, killings, and post-election tensions, advocating forgiveness, respect for the constitution, prisoner releases for the innocent, and national healing through Christ’s resurrection.
This message aligns with Easter’s theme of repentance and renewal.
