Allan Ssekamatte Simonsen was a towering figure in Uganda’s sports media, remembered for his calm demeanor and sharp insights. Unlike fiery pundits of his era, he argued points boldly yet soothingly, captivating audiences on radio, TV, and print before the internet era.
The writer’s last interaction with Ssekamatte was a casual WhatsApp exchange in September 2025 about buying a Suzuki Grand Vitara, highlighting his approachable side amid everyday life.
Their paths crossed in 2010 at The Razor newspaper, where Ssekamatte joined as sports editor. A fan-turned-colleague, the writer recalls the excitement of working under him. Ssekamatte praised his writing style, encouraging features on football and boxing, drawing from the writer’s firsthand experiences.
They bonded like mentor and apprentice, with Ssekamatte positioning desks close for collaboration. His rare, booming laughter once froze the newsroom, a moment colleagues cherished.
When The Razor folded in 2011 due to financial woes, Ssekamatte showed loyalty by sharing his salary to ensure the young writer got paid during tough times.
Later, Ssekamatte battled mental health issues and domestic challenges, shared publicly on Facebook, yet received little support. The tribute laments not reconnecting sooner, celebrating a man of few words whose belief shaped careers.
As his remains are laid to rest in Butambala, Ssekamatte’s legacy as the ‘gentle giant’ endures.
