Farmers in Uganda, whether managing vast fields or small plots, are increasingly relying on measurements for nearly every stage of production. Assumpta Nampeera, a regenerative farmer from Zirobwe Sub-county in Luweero District, uses them on her five-acre coffee and banana plantation to maximize space and apply exact amounts of seedlings, manure, and fertilizers.
Nampeera notes that such practices echo traditional methods, like her grandparents counting seeds and planting in lines, but modern approaches demand precision for profitability. ‘Almost no activity on my farm skips measurements,’ she states.
Dr. Christopher Herbert Namiisi, a retired agriculture officer, insists no farmer can thrive without them. Measurements enable better land apportionment, precise fertilizer dosing, pest control, and resource optimization, ultimately maximizing profits and minimizing waste.
Common units include hectares or acres for land (1 hectare ≈ 2.47 acres), kilograms for seeds, meters for spacing, grams or tons for mass, liters for volumes, Celsius for temperature, and standard time units.
Accuracy is crucial to prevent disasters like crop withering, yield loss, or animal deaths from over- or under-dosing medicines and acaricides. Experts urge strict adherence to prescribed amounts for sustainable farming success.
