Trump's Iran Conflict Echoes Iraq Quagmire Amid Global Economic Fallout

Donald Trump's war against Iran has escalated into a regional crisis, closing the Strait of Hormuz and triggering a global economic downturn, much like the Iraq War he once criticized. Europe faces the heaviest consequences outside the Middle East despite distancing itself from the conflict. Donald Trump rose to power in 2016 by condemning the Iraq War as a costly quagmire led by neoconservatives and supported by Hillary Clinton. He vowed to avoid such ‘forever wars’ and prioritize America.

Yet, after returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump launched interventions, including in Venezuela and a joint war with Israel against Iran. He hoped assassinating leaders like Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei would swiftly topple the regime.

Iran struck back by sealing the Strait of Hormuz and targeting key infrastructure, dragging the US into an unplanned quagmire without clear goals. The regime has held firm, expanded the conflict across the oil-rich Middle East, and profited from its own exports still passing through the strait.

This has sparked a worldwide economic crisis, eroding support among US voters before midterm elections. Failure to reopen the strait would signal America’s decline, emboldening rivals globally.

The conflict showcases how affordable AI-guided drones enable smaller powers to challenge advanced militaries, akin to trends in Ukraine. A prolonged Iranian victory could bolster its nuclear ambitions and economic leverage.

Europe claims the war isn’t theirs but will suffer most from Middle East instability, lacking coordination with the US. The piece urges Europe to build its own sovereign security amid this crisis.
