During Good Friday observances on April 3, 2026, Mr. Dennis Zziwa, a second-year law student from Kampala International University, took on the role of Jesus Christ in the ‘Way of the Cross’ procession at Our Lady of Africa Church in Kampala. The realistic reenactment involved whippings that left him injured, requiring immediate attention from Red Cross personnel on site.

Zziwa was later moved to Lamone Health Centre in Luzira for advanced medical care. Photos captured the moment he was assisted into an ambulance by medics.

Across Uganda, Christians marked the occasion with various processions. The Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC) held a large ecumenical service at Old Kampala Secondary School playground, led by Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere and Assistant Bishop Fredrick Baalwa, themed around loving God and neighbor from Luke 10:27.

In Jinja, Rev. Fr. Achilles Wandera guided hundreds through city streets. Soroti saw Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Eciru lead a 12-kilometre march, while Adjumani and Maracha hosted local reenactments. Notably, Gulu’s joint procession ended after over a decade due to doctrinal and administrative issues, with the Catholic Archdiocese holding separate events.

Religious leaders addressed pressing national concerns, condemning the April 2 knife attack killing four children at a Ggaba daycare. They decried corruption, called for fair taxes, and urged repentance, faith renewal, and non-violence, with voices from bishops like Fred Sheldon Mwesigwa and Moses Banja.
