Bugiri Police Officers Detained Over Fatal Shooting During Arrest
Two police officers in Bugiri District, including a station commander, have been arrested after a 33-year-old man was killed in a shooting during an arrest operation. Authorities in Bugiri District, eastern Uganda, have detained ASP Innocent Wagaba, Officer in Charge of Buwunga Police Station, and Cpl Stephen Okwalinga following the death of 33-year-old Mugoya Alamanzani.
The shooting occurred around 4:40 a.m. in Nambale Village, Buwunga Sub-county. Police were arresting Mugoya Nasiru on assault charges when he alerted relatives and locals.
A mob armed with pangas, sticks, and stones confronted the officers to rescue the suspect. In response, the police fired shots to disperse the crowd and protect themselves.
Tragically, Mugoya Alamanzani was struck and killed in the chaos. Detectives processed the scene, collected evidence, and took the body to Bugiri Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
Investigations are ongoing to clarify the full details.
