Why Your Passenger Airbag Light Stays On Even Without a Passenger

The passenger airbag light illuminating on an empty seat often points to issues with the seat's pressure sensor, such as damage, calibration loss, or corrosion. Non-fault triggers like heavy items, electronics, or thick seat covers can also activate it. Source: https://www.monitor.co.ug/uganda/business/auto/what-causes-the-airbag-light-to-stay-on--5410400

A driver noticed the ‘Passenger Airbag On’ light on the dashboard despite no one sitting in the seat, prompting questions about sensor failure or other triggers.

Modern vehicles use a passenger occupancy detector in the seat pad—a pressure mat that detects if someone is seated and activates the airbag accordingly. When the light stays on with an empty seat, the sensor is usually the culprit.

Mechanical damage to the sensor’s mesh structure can cause short circuits. This often happens if passengers stand on the seat for sunroof access or kneel to reach rear items. Replacing the faulty pressure mat typically fixes it.

Sensors can also lose calibration, falsely detecting weight. Mechanics use diagnostic tools to reset them for accurate zero-weight recognition.

Corrosion from spills or cleaning moisture can damage connectors and wiring in the SRS system. An auto electrician should inspect and replace affected yellow airbag circuits.

Before repairs, check non-fault causes:

  • Electronics: Phones, laptops, or tablets on the seat may interfere with the sensor’s field.
  • Heavy objects: Bags, juice containers, or backpacks over 5kg can mimic occupant weight (threshold around 29kg).
  • Seat covers: Thick, tight-fitting ones apply constant pressure; opt for thinner, vehicle-compatible alternatives.

Addressing these resolves most cases without major fixes.
