Wakiso District has approved a Shs296 billion budget for the 2026/2027 financial year, marking an 8 percent reduction from the previous Shs321 billion allocation.

The cut stems from Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA) funding shifts, emphasizing completion of ongoing road projects over new starts. GKMA projects coordinator Archilles Kiwanuka noted that five roads have been handed over, including the 12.71km Bukasa-Sentema-Kakiri road at 34 percent completion and the 6.5km Kitemu-Kisozi-Nagalabi at 31 percent.

Roads, housing, and engineering dominate with Shs176 billion, funding tarmacking, gravelling, maintenance, and new markets like Kawuku, Bulaga, and Wakiso Central. Salaries follow at Shs56 billion (19 percent), with education allocated Shs47 billion.

Vice chairperson Betinah Nantenge, who presented the budget, highlighted minimal funding for governance (Shs42 million), planning (Shs774 million), and community development (Shs885 million). She stressed the importance of teamwork to sustain achievements.

Budget constraints persist, with only Shs24 billion received from Shs201 billion in expected grants by the third quarter, delaying some projects to the next fiscal year.
