Uganda recorded $2.5 billion in remittance inflows in 2025, making up about 3.8% of the country’s GDP. This figure emerged from a new data collection framework launched by the Bank of Uganda (BoU) in June 2025, in collaboration with partners like the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

The enhanced system captured more than 16 million transactions, with an average value of $152. Over 93% of these were under $499, mainly funding essentials like food, schooling, and medical care for households.

The United States topped the list of sender nations at $702 million (28% of total), followed by Saudi Arabia, the UK, UAE, and Canada. Digital platforms handled 73% of inflows, led by mobile money at 61%, while cash via traditional channels accounted for 27%.

Uganda stayed a net recipient, with outflows at $402 million to countries including India, Kenya, the US, UK, and Canada.

At the dashboard launch in Kampala, BoU’s statistics director Milly Nalukwago Isingoma highlighted algorithm checks for data accuracy and future API integrations for smoother reporting. Deputy Governor Augustus Nuwagaba emphasized remittances’ human side, sharing his diaspora struggles in the UK to underscore their role in the economy.

IFAD’s David S. Berno stressed remittances’ boost to rural resilience, while Presidential advisor Hillary Musoke reaffirmed government efforts to leverage diaspora contributions.
