Leaders in Tororo District are under fire for allegedly giving away public land to private individuals, affecting key institutions such as Oguti Primary School, Rock View School, Elgon View Primary School, King George Memorial Stadium, Children’s Lion Park, and Tororo Hospital in Nyangole Sub-county.

At Oguti Primary School, founded by the Church of Uganda in 1958, portions of the playground have been subdivided and leased out, sparking outrage among parents, teachers, and residents. The PTA chairperson, Ernest Osinde Odwest, highlighted how the dispute has crippled sports and co-curricular programs, stalling school development.

Tororo Municipality Mayor Kennedy Orono Nyapidi denied current leadership’s involvement, blaming past officials and pointing to a 1999 council meeting that aimed to relocate or compensate occupants. He noted ongoing court cases for sites like Amagoro Primary School and Children’s Lion Park, with the hospital land under State House Anti-Corruption Unit review. The council is now working to title all public lands.

School headteacher Helen Lunyolo revealed leases from the early 1990s without approval, leading to vandalism of attempted fences. An alumna, Lillian Atim, lamented the loss of land used for agriculture and sports training.

LC5 councillor Noah Okumu demanded recovery of the land and prosecution of those responsible, urging government agencies to probe the fraudulent allocations.
