NMG MD Nsibirwa Praises Kalinaki’s 28-Year Legacy at Farewell Event

Staff at Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda gathered on March 31, 2026, at their Namuwongo headquarters in Kampala to bid farewell to outgoing Managing Editor Daniel Kalinaki after nearly 28 years with the organization.

Managing Director Susan Nsibirwa lauded Kalinaki as a dedicated mentor and leader. She noted that he delayed his departure at her request to steer the newsroom through a key election period. “Thank you for investing in journalists, editors, and teams,” Nsibirwa said, wishing him global influence ahead.

Kalinaki shared memories of his career, pinpointing a 2003 exposé on the Constitutional Review Commission’s handling of term limit petitions as his standout story. Despite facing arrests and threats, he expressed no regrets but lamented limited political progress.

Stepping away from mainstream media, Kalinaki plans to work on books, documentaries, and industry support via the Editors Guild. He firmly ruled out returning to a traditional newsroom.

Addressing aspiring journalists, he advised: “Stay hungry, stay foolish, have intellectual curiosity, and understand how the world works to inform yourself and audiences.”

Colleagues like Aidah Nalubega and David Mukwaya praised his generosity, recounting personal support during hardships and aid to families of deceased staff. Kalinaki remains hopeful for the next generation to shape Uganda’s future through journalism.
