Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has appointed Col Deo Akiiki as Uganda’s military attaché and defence advisor in Washington, D.C. The announcement came on Wednesday night, with Akiiki set to replace Col Peter Sonko Buwungo.

Col Akiiki, who has served as Military Assistant to Gen Muhoozi since February last year, previously worked as Deputy Defence Public Information Officer at the Ministry of Defence. He told reporters he awaits diplomatic formalities between Uganda and the US before assuming the post.

This development follows retired US General Michael Flynn’s recent visit to Kampala less than three weeks ago. Flynn, former National Security Advisor under President Trump and head of Flynn Intel Group, met President Museveni, Gen Muhoozi, and senior officers.

Flynn’s 36-year career included leading the Defence Intelligence Agency until 2014. His trip has fueled speculation of Uganda’s efforts to improve ties with Washington, amid tightened US sanctions on Ugandan and regional officials.
