Prof Grace Lubaale, Bishop of Busoga Diocese, has urged President Yoweri Museveni to release all political prisoners to foster national reconciliation and democratic progress.
Delivering his Easter message on Thursday, the bishop linked Christian principles of forgiveness and mercy to the need for political amnesty, particularly for those detained during recent elections.
He pointed out Uganda’s deep political divisions after disputed polls, with opposition and civil society decrying arrests, detentions, and rights abuses.
Releasing these individuals, Lubaale argued, would rebuild public confidence, enhance Uganda’s democratic image regionally and globally, and symbolize Easter’s renewal and justice.
The call comes as the National Unity Platform (NUP) reports over 3,000 members arrested since February 2026, with only 616 traced, amid government claims of lawful actions for security.
Bishop Lubaale encouraged the president to prioritize harmony over partisan divides.
