Over 40 of the nearly 70 independent Members of Parliament-elect have registered for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) retreat at Kyankwanzi, signaling potential shifts toward the ruling party as the 12th Parliament approaches.
The week-long gathering, from April 7 to 15, will unite new MPs, party leaders, and officials to shape Uganda’s legislative and policy path. Participants must report to Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on April 6 for accreditation and health checks before heading out.
NRM Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja highlighted the retreat’s role in inducting newcomers and building party cohesion, following directives from the National Chairman to invite all new MPs, especially NRM-leaning independents open to formal agreements.
NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong stressed ideological training for young and first-time MPs, with sessions on the first day. Topics include Musevenomics, economic transformation, regional integration, security, human capital, infrastructure, agriculture, and parliamentary effectiveness.
Todwong noted ongoing talks with more independents, expecting higher attendance, and extended an invitation to opposition MPs to learn about government operations and Uganda’s future direction.
The event will also feature NRM’s Central Executive Committee, Cabinet ministers with seats, and top officials, continuing Kyankwanzi’s tradition of fostering patriotism and socio-economic focus.
