Law enforcement in Ceuta, a Spanish territory bordering Morocco, has busted an elaborate drug tunnel hidden under an industrial warehouse. The setup featured a descent shaft, a storage chamber for pallets, and the main tunnel with a rail system and cranes designed to move hashish into Europe.

This discovery highlights Ceuta’s role as a key entry point for drugs, being one of the EU’s only land borders with Africa. Spain typically sees hashish arriving by speedboats, but this tunnel represents a more advanced smuggling technique.

In the raid, officers confiscated 17 metric tons of hashish and 1.4 million euros in cash, while detaining 27 suspects. Spain dominates EU resin seizures, handling 68% in 2023 per EU drugs agency figures.

The country also faces other smuggling innovations, like cocaine-carrying submarines in Galicia from South America.
