At Makerere University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the campus echoes with Russian poetry alongside Luganda and English. Recently, UPDF students and civilians recited Alexander Pushkin’s verses and performed traditional songs, demonstrating impressive proficiency.

Major Frederick Wanambwa, from the School of Defence Intelligence and Security, stressed that Russian mastery aids multinational military operations. He described it as ‘the language of the soul,’ essential for soldiers beyond mere communication.

The program stems from Rosinka, the Russian-speaking Women’s Association in Uganda, led by Olga Atubo. What started informally has grown into a formal initiative with Russian specialists and a Makerere MoU. Atubo, a long-time resident, views members as Ugandans committed to teaching locals.

Major General Sergei Marchuk, head of Russian Military Experts, commended the learners’ bravery with the complex language and promised ongoing embassy support. Dr. Eric Awich Ochen, CHUSS Deputy Principal, noted how adding Russian boosts the university’s global standing alongside other languages like Chinese and Arabic.

This effort builds unlikely bridges through shared language and culture.
