Daniel Kalinaki, fondly remembered as DK, began his journey at Kamuli Boys Boarding Primary School (KAMBOS) under teacher Opio Sam Caleb from 1989 to 1991. Known for his extraordinary memory, he memorized notes instead of writing them down and excelled in poetry with works like Give Us Our Future Now.

As a student leader, DK served as secretary of the Debating Club, editor of the Writers Club, and held key Scout roles including pack leader and troop leader. He belonged to elite groups like the Siasa Boy Scouts and Cockroaches School Writers Club, earning favoritism from head teacher Patrick Isota.

A pivotal moment came during a 1989 Scout Jamboree accident, which survivors marked with DK’s poem We Shall Die Scouts. His leadership turned troublemakers into disciplined recruits, living by Scout mottos of doing one’s best and staying prepared.

Originally aspiring to be a paediatric doctor—earning the nickname after a Primary Five story on premature babies titled The Cooked Children—DK veered into journalism. He started at Nation Media Group writing for Children’s Voice and Rainbow magazine, eventually becoming General Manager Editorial.

Colleagues praise his genius, work ethic, and incorruptibility, traits rooted in his KAMBOS days. Inspired by Nelson Mandela, nicknamed ‘Zulu Boy,’ he named his sons after the icon. Recently, DK announced his departure, citing boredom and a desire for new challenges.

His teacher bids him farewell with Scout principles: Do Your Best, Remain on Your Honour.
