Fred Tumuheirweza, the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) candidate in the January 15 elections, has filed a petition at Rukungiri High Court against Security Minister Jim Muhwezi’s declaration as winner of Rujumbura County parliamentary seat.
Represented by M/s Ruyondo & Company Advocates, Tumuheirweza accuses Muhwezi of electoral offences during campaigns and claims the Electoral Commission failed to follow electoral laws. He seeks annulment of the results, a fresh poll, and costs from the respondents.
Muhwezi won with 25,007 votes against Turyamuhweza’s 23,307. The minister has submitted his defence but did not respond to inquiries.
In a related case, NRM’s Asgario Turyagyenda petitioned Kabale High Court on March 30, challenging Independent Eddie Kwizera Wa Gahungu’s win in Bukimbiri County, Kisoro District.
Through M/s JByamukama & Co. Advocates, Turyagyenda alleges Kwizera committed illegal practices and seeks to nullify the election, order a rerun, and recover costs.
Kabale High Court Registrar Kenneth Tumwebaze notified Kwizera and the EC on March 31 to file defences within 10 days. Kwizera affirmed his readiness to respond once served.
