Daniel Kalinaki, fondly called DK, has left an indelible mark on Ugandan journalism after more than 20 years in the industry. His signature, featuring a witty Norman Mailer quote, hinted at his self-deprecating humor, but his talents far exceeded those of a mere journalist—he could have been a novelist, lawyer, or surgeon.
DK’s conversations were masterclasses, blending sharp insights on topics from Ankole’s cow economy to Uganda’s history. He spoke broken Kiswahili and navigated media turbulence with sophistication, leading Daily Monitor and NTV to challenge power boldly yet survive government pressures without shutdowns.
A print veteran, he mastered digital metrics like page views and revenue per user. Amid daily newsroom demands, he authored the influential 2014 book Kizza Besigye and Uganda’s Unfinished Revolution, a key text on modern Ugandan politics.
As editor-in-chief of Nation Media Group-Uganda, peers relied on his advice. He chaired the Uganda Editors’ Guild and led the East African Editors’ Society, extending his influence regionally.
His true legacy lies in mentoring young journalists, fostering a newsroom culture of curiosity, courage, and nuance. Many under his guidance learned not just reporting, but critical thinking and confidence in a struggling industry.
As DK retires, the newsroom honors his conquests and commits to upholding his lessons. Source: Daily Monitor
