The Tooro Kingdom has donated 50 acres of land to the Ugandan government to construct a state-of-the-art stadium. This move honors a commitment made by King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire handed over the land title documents at the kingdom’s headquarters in Fort Portal. State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang accepted them on behalf of the government.

Ogwang announced that technical teams will immediately start feasibility studies and planning. He linked the handover to a 2025 meeting between the king and President Museveni during a Parish Development Model tour, where the land offer was first made.

The project falls under Education and Sports Minister Janet Museveni’s oversight. Ogwang emphasized that full legal ownership must be secured before any construction begins, in line with regulations.

While Uganda gears up for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, this stadium is a priority but not a main venue. Rwomiire suggested naming it ‘King Oyo Stadium’ and adding a sports academy for local talent.

Ogwang welcomed the naming idea for review and noted the design will feature a royal suite and Batooro cultural elements. He stressed sustainability to avoid creating an unused facility.

In related news, the kingdom launched its inaugural inter-clan football tournament involving 30 clans, with games starting April 4. The minister called for focus on scouting young players for professional pathways.
