Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, has released Brig Gen Johnson Abaho Namanya after holding him for five days.
The decision came after an amicable meeting where Namanya was cleared of all accusations against him, according to Chris Magezi, acting director of defence public information, in a post on X.
“Brig Gen Namanya will resume his military duties accordingly,” Magezi stated.
Namanya and Maj Gen Don William Nabasa were arrested last Thursday on suspicion of corruption-related offenses. The arrest orders were directed to Lt Gen Sam Okiding, Chief Inspector of the Armed Forces and Deputy CDF, who detained them initially at Mbuya before transferring them to the Special Forces Command facility in Kasenyi.
Prior to the arrest, Nabasa served as Joint Staff for Policy and Strategy, while Namanya had been recalled from his role as Commissioner for Citizenship and Passport Management at the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control.
In related developments, Gen Muhoozi dismissed Brig Abdul Rugumayo from his position as Deputy Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security, replacing him with Brig Gen Oscar Munanura and reassigning Rugumayo to Defence Headquarters in Mbuya.
These actions reflect ongoing efforts to enforce accountability within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) since Muhoozi took office as CDF.
