Paul Sande Emolot, the Emorimor and leader of the Iteso Cultural Union (ICU), addressed parents in Teso, insisting that education must be the cornerstone of every household. He warned that the future of the Iteso people hinges on raising a skilled and knowledgeable generation.
Speaking at the burial of retired prisons officer Aloni Obarasa Emolot in Angolol North, Mella Sub-county, Tororo District, Emolot shared a personal anecdote. ‘I could have been a king without schooling, but education changed my path. Allocate your resources wisely and budget for education first,’ he stated.
The cultural leader highlighted parents’ vital role beyond government aid, including ensuring regular school attendance, creating supportive home environments, and engaging in parent-teacher associations. He condemned child labor and early marriages, advocating for equal access to education for girls and vulnerable children.
Emolot also rallied traditional leaders, religious groups, and local councils to collaborate on mentorship, vocational training, scholarships, school upkeep, and adult literacy programs.
He reminded youth of their duty to care for parents in old age, calling them their ‘pension.’ The event also promoted contributions to the Iteso cultural palace project.
Reverend Benjamin Ikemer reinforced the message, labeling education as the greatest parental gift. Tributes to the deceased praised his focus on his children’s schooling, which secured his later care.
