Ms. Galiemaya Kiyingi, widow of the late Australian-based Ugandan cardiologist Dr. Aggrey Kiyingi, has no plans to enter politics in Uganda or elsewhere.
In a recent interview, she emphasized her dedication to raising her children, handling professional responsibilities, and upholding her husband’s medical legacy. This statement counters media speculation about her potential run for the Mawokota South parliamentary seat.
Kiyingi explained that her immediate focus is managing the medical institutions linked to her late husband’s work in Australia. She envisions sustaining this legacy through professional and humanitarian channels, potentially benefiting Uganda if her children pursue it, but not via politics.
Dr. Kiyingi, who passed away in 2023 at 75, had faced past controversies including prosecution over his first wife Robinah’s 2005 murder and unproven government accusations of funding rebels. He once aspired to Uganda’s presidency without success.
Addressing her meetings with figures like Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Kiyingi described them as non-political, rooted in her husband’s global professional networks. She affirmed no ties to political parties, no mobilization efforts, and a commitment to transparent developmental work in healthcare and capacity building in Uganda.
She is also responsibly managing her husband’s estate and business interests with an emphasis on compliance and sustainability.
