Jayden Magulu Jr, a 12-year-old Ugandan boxing sensation born on March 12, 2014, has arrived in the United States with his mother Dora Birungi and coach Henry Kasujja. They landed in late January to join the prestigious KFB Academy in Houston, Texas, under renowned coach Israel King.

As the youngest African boxer at the academy, Magulu trains alongside elite talents like IBF welterweight champion Jeron ‘Boots’ Ennis and WBC lightweight titleholder Shakur Stevenson. His father, Stephen Sembuya of 12 Sports Rounds Promotions, described the move as a ‘dream come true,’ noting the modern facilities and experienced trainers.

Adapting to American life has been a big change for Magulu, from the environment and culture to starting middle school in Texas after completing primary six in Kampala. Despite the newness, Sembuya says his son is catching up well. During a recent two-week break, Magulu trained at Uppercuts Gym in Ashland, Massachusetts, near his father’s home.

Magulu’s boxing journey began young. At Kampala Parents School, he explored football, basketball, taekwondo, and more, but boxing remained his passion. His principal, Daphine Kato, called the KFB opportunity ‘golden’ and encouraged parents to back their kids’ sports alongside studies.

The prodigy has already fought in Uganda, Nairobi, and Dubai. In November, he will compete in the Silver Gloves, his first major US tournament—likely a first for any African boxer, according to Sembuya.

Uganda boasts a history of boxers chasing dreams in the US, from world champions like John Mugabi to others who found success or struggle. Magulu stands out with his father’s guidance in this foreign land.
