Uganda’s roads claimed 5,383 lives in 2025, equating to about 15 deaths daily, as revealed in the 2025 Annual Crime Report launched by Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba.

Assistant Inspector General Lawrence Niwabiine presented the statistics, noting a rise from 5,144 fatalities in 2024, or roughly 13-14 per day. This continues an upward trend: 4,806 deaths in 2023 and 4,534 in 2022.

Most crashes happened daytime, but deaths peaked between 6pm and 8pm with 3,484 cases. Lowest fatalities occurred from 2pm to 3pm. December saw the most incidents at 2,443, while June had 1,978. Fatalities topped in October at 523, lowest in June at 390.

Niwabiine attributed spikes to high travel during holidays, commerce, and long distances. Pedestrians made up many victims: 43% crossing roads, 32% walking along them, 9% standing nearby. Boda boda riders and passengers face high risks, often without helmets.

A road safety expert highlighted non-compliance with helmet use as a key issue for rider and passenger deaths. Weekends were deadliest: Sundays with 810 fatalities, Saturdays 729. Crashes peaked Fridays to Sundays.

Pedestrian collisions led at 20% of incidents, followed by side-swipes, rear-ends, and head-ons from errors like unsafe overtaking.

The report, released at Police Headquarters in Naguru, also noted overall crime fell from 218,715 cases in 2024 to 196,405 in 2025.
