Teachers in Soroti District took bold action on Monday, storming the human resource officer’s office to voice their frustration over prolonged salary delays. At least 15 educators, recruited as early as April and July last year, have been excluded from the government payroll despite repeated appeals to local authorities.

The frustrated group arrived with placards, insisting on immediate clearance of their arrears. They highlighted severe financial hardships, including mounting bills and family obligations they could no longer meet.

Ms Edith Akayo from Obiarai Primary School shared her ordeal, noting she has received no pay since April last year. Similarly, Mr David Opio of Awaliwal Primary School lamented his exclusion since July, warning of potential legal troubles from unpaid lenders.

District Human Resource Officer Mr Charles Oonyu admitted the delays, assuring that five teachers have been approved for payment this week, with the rest to follow in arrears. He pointed to administrative issues, such as schools recently shifted to the city not yet integrated into the payroll system, and ongoing confirmations with the Ministry of Public Service.

Communications Officer Mr Abraham Ekwaru called for patience, blaming systemic delays beyond the district’s control.
