Godfrey Luyombya, NUP’s LC-V councillor for Nakawa II division and former divisional speaker, is gaining strong support to succeed current KCCA speaker Zahara Luyirika.
Party sources reveal discussions to nominate a single candidate, praising Luyombya’s clean record, unifying qualities, and charitable efforts via the Godfrey Luyombya Foundation.
NUP holds 18 councillors, edging out NRM’s 16 plus two leaning independents, a tighter race than NUP’s 2021 dominance before seat reductions.
NRM plans to unite behind one contender and lure NUP defectors. Luyirika won in June 2021 with 43 of 52 votes.
The speaker oversees council meetings, maintains order, and enforces procedures. Luyombya’s Nakawa ties, shared with incoming lord mayor Ronald Balimwezo, might raise concerns, but he stays the frontrunner for early June polls.
