Ntungamo District is in mourning following the passing of Kweronda Ruhemba, the former Minister for Economic Monitoring in the Office of the President. The 79-year-old died on Saturday at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital after years confined to a wheelchair at his home in Butega village, Kagamba Town Council.
Ruhemba represented Kajara County as MP in the National Resistance Council and Constituency Assembly. He lost the seat in 2001 to Herbert Muntu before serving as High Commissioner to South Africa until 2009. During his ministerial role, he exposed issues leading to Uganda Airlines’ collapse, including a failed merger deal.
Local leaders praised his character. Kajara County MP Michael Timuzigu Kamugisha described him as a selfless mentor whose endorsement influenced county politics long after his term. “He nurtured leadership and was always available for advice, even in ill health,” Kamugisha noted.
Former District Chairperson Denis Singahache called him a pillar of sober, emulable leadership that united people and advanced their interests. Rushenyi County MP Naome Kabasharira, a parliamentary colleague, remembered him as straight, objective, and patriotic, crediting him with guiding her and helping form Ntungamo District.
Family and others expressed regret over his later years. Brother Dan Ruhemba highlighted his loyalty to the NRM and hoped the president would address pending issues. Social media users and figures like Gloria Kamayangi lamented government neglect, noting his financial struggles and calls for a state funeral. He will be buried at his Butega home on Thursday.
