A legal showdown is brewing in Rukungiri after Ingrid Kamateneti Turinawe, the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) candidate, lodged a petition at the High Court to nullify the January 15, 2026 parliamentary election results for Rukungiri Municipality.

Turinawe, who garnered 6,268 votes, trails the declared winner, National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Lt. Gen. (rtd) Henry Tumukunde, with 7,115 votes. Represented by lawyer Isaac Kwagala, she accuses Tumukunde and the Electoral Commission of colluding to rig the process through inconsistencies that undermined the election’s integrity.

The petition also questions Tumukunde’s eligibility, pointing to alleged interference with electoral officials. Speaking to journalists post-filing, Turinawe expressed confidence in her victory, rallying supporters to stay hopeful and prepare for court.

Tumukunde responded calmly, noting he hasn’t received the petition but is ready to defend himself in court. The Rukungiri District Returning Officer, Abas K. Namara, confirmed his office has yet to get a copy.

A seasoned opposition activist, Turinawe previously worked as a senior mobiliser for the Forum for Democratic Change before aligning with PFF.
