A tense moment unfolded at Uganda Technical College Lira during Sunday’s FUFA Drum interprovince tournament match between Lango and Teso provinces. With over 15,000 fans packed into the venue, excitement peaked around the 79th minute of the second half when Lango netted a goal against Teso.

In the chaos, several supporters climbed onto the roof of a dilapidated classroom block for a better view. The ageing structure couldn’t bear the weight and partially collapsed, injuring eight people.

North Kyoga police spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema confirmed the details, noting that officers quickly evacuated the victims. Injuries included fractures to arms and legs, as well as dental damage.

Named victims from Lira City include Emmanuel Ouni, Dan Okello, and Sam Ogwal. From Soroti District are Michael Emitu, Eliza Ayaka, and John Elotu. Two others were transferred to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital.

All are under treatment at Lira Regional Referral Hospital. Police have opened a case of accidental collapse at Lira City East Division and are investigating.

The match started at 4pm with Shs5,000 entry fees, but the massive crowd overwhelmed security, leading fans to perch on trees and the fatal roof.

Lango advanced to the semi-finals with a 1-0 win, joining Acholi, Bunyoro, and Buganda.

Authorities warned fans to steer clear of unsafe structures at crowded events to prevent repeats.
