Veron Mossengo-Omba, the general secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), announced his resignation on Sunday, framing it as a retirement after more than three decades promoting the sport across the continent.

In his statement, the 66-year-old Swiss citizen of Congolese origin expressed gratitude to CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe and his teams for advancements in African football. He claimed to leave the organization stronger, having cleared prior suspicions against him.

However, his departure occurs during a period of intense scrutiny for CAF. Criticism has mounted over his tenure beyond the mandatory retirement age of 63, alongside a toxic workplace scandal—though an internal probe exonerated him—and demands for probes into alleged corruption.

Tensions escalated after CAF’s Appeals Board stripped Senegal of its Africa Cup of Nations title, prompting the Senegalese government to call for an international investigation into the body’s operations and damaging the image of African football.

CAF President Motsepe contradicted the retirement narrative at a press conference, stating Mossengo-Omba was recruited by DR Congo’s president to boost football there. Sources indicate he may contest for the DR Congo football federation presidency soon, positioning him as a potential CAF leadership contender if Motsepe steps aside.

Samson Adamu, CAF’s competitions director, has been appointed acting general secretary.
