Innocent Mwebaze, a promising 22-year-old right-arm medium-fast bowler for Uganda’s Cricket Cranes, has traveled to India for intensive rehabilitation after a two-year battle with a lower back injury caused by his mixed bowling action.
The young pacer from Nyakasura, who debuted in the national setup as a backup to frontline seamers like Juma Miyaji, Cosmas Kyewuta, and Bilal Hassan, saw his progress stall due to the recurring issue. He even joined the Uganda squad as a reserve for the 2024 World Cup in the West Indies.
Now at the Omtex I Can We Can Cricket Institute in Maharashtra, Mwebaze is following a structured two-month program. It targets lumbar spine recovery, core strength, bowling action correction, and gradual return-to-play conditioning, addressing both physical and mental aspects to rebuild his confidence.
Mwebaze remains upbeat, stating this chance has renewed his hope for a full recovery and stronger comeback. Cricket Uganda’s High Performance head, Richard Okia, backs the move, calling Mwebaze a long-term prospect who could anchor the team’s pace department amid rising competition.
With a career highlight of 10 wickets in six T20s including a best of 6/24, and idolizing Dale Steyn, success here could propel him back into contention.
