Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere Iremangoma has dismissed claims that he or his cultural institution is advocating for a separate ‘Yira State’ or ‘Yira Republic.’ Speaking to subjects in Kasese Town on March 27, 2026, after returning from medical treatment abroad, he criticized unnamed individuals for misrepresenting the kingdom’s intentions.

The king stressed that Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu’s mission is cultural, aimed at protecting the Bayira people’s heritage, language, and unity. He rejected separatist agendas, declaring, ‘I am not fighting for the Yira State or Yira Republic.’

Mumbere highlighted colonial divisions that split the Bayira—known as Bakonzo in Uganda and Banande in DR Congo—despite shared culture, language, and names. He argued that ‘Bakonzo’ is a derogatory nickname derived from Swahili for ‘sick person,’ crediting his father Isaya Mukirania with efforts to restore the original ‘Bayira’ identity and Lhuyira language.

He urged scholars and leaders to preserve the authentic language and phase out distorted terms. Mumbere noted many in Kasese trace roots to DR Congo and called for examining those without such ties.

Warning against exploitation of youth for destabilizing causes, he referenced past violence like the 2016 clashes and 2025 incidents. The king promoted peace, development, and unity, reaffirming the kingdom’s recognition and cross-border cultural ties.
