Flavia Amaniyo faced a life-altering car accident in May 2023, striking her right temple and causing nerve damage that left her right arm and leg dysfunctional for months. Hospitalized for three months, she missed school terms but bravely returned to St Michael International School, passing her final exams despite the risks.

Her sports return was tough. In late 2023, at national trials for the African Games, she won only two of 15 matches. She pushed on in the January 2024 national league, despite early absences, vowing to take recovery step by step.

Two years on, Amaniyo shone at the Kateregga Memorial Schools’ and Institutions Table Tennis Championship in early March at Lugogo Indoor Arena. The event honors Francis Kateregga, a young talent killed in a 1997 accident after his All-Africa Games bronze.

Amaniyo secured silver in university women’s singles, falling 3-2 to Isbat University’s Shanita Naamala, but clinched MVP after steering Uganda Christian University to team gold.

‘It was a journey of endurance and sacrifices,’ she reflected, crediting coaches for reigniting her confidence. Despite fears of re-injury or paralysis, she now aims higher: ‘Now I want to play more. And win more trophies.’
