The Ankole Diocese has kicked off the process to find a new bishop to succeed Sheldon Mwesigwa, who has led the diocese for over 17 years.

On March 26, 2026, during the 27th synod meeting at St James Cathedral in Ruharo, Mbarara City, a 15-member search committee was elected. Francis Butagira, the diocesan chancellor and former Speaker of Parliament, chairs the group.

Key members include Ven Rev Sarah Abareba, Ven Rev Patrick Atuhaire, Rev Aggrey Aijuka, Ven Rev Canon Stephen Tuyasingura, Ven Yonah Byaruhanga, Canon John Kaganzi, Mr Nathan Mugume, Mr Martin Kananura, Canon Gloria Kakyuliza, Dr Jeninah Mwesigye, Ms Winnie Atwiine, Mr Aston Perplex, Ms Darison Owomugasho, and Ms Doreen Ninsiima Desire.

Bishop Mwesigwa blessed the committee, praising its members for their integrity, faith, and competence. He plans to hand over on September 27, 2027, after farewell visits and reviewing achievements.

Church leaders like Noel Eric from Uganda Bible Institute voiced confidence in the committee’s ability to ensure a smooth transition. Member Herbert Batungira hopes for a leader to steer the diocese forward.

The synod also nominated leaders for committees on education, health, household transformation, evangelism, and mission.

Established in 1967, Ankole Diocese serves Mbarara, Isingiro, and Rwampara districts, with headquarters in Ruharo.
